CORVALLIS, Ore. – Ugly never looked so beautiful to Lorenzo Romar than in Washington’s bruising, foul-filled victory Sunday afternoon at steamy Gill Coliseum.
Washington managed to salvage a road split of the Oregon schools with a 75-72 win over Oregon State. It was a win that was neither pretty nor easy. But in the end, the Huskies are still tied for first place in the Pacific-12 Conference with California at 10-3.

For the second time in Lorenzo Romar’s tenure as coach of the Washington Huskies, his basketball team has a 9-2 record in conference play.
They have been courted, hired and announced via press release. They have recruited and helped sign their first class as a coaching staff. They have crossed paths a few times on the road and on campus, and finally sat down for their first full staff meeting a week ago.
For three games, Shawn Kemp Jr. sat on the bench and mostly watched. He sat the entire game against Stanford, played four minutes at Arizona State and then sat the entire game at Arizona.
In terms of overall aesthetics, the Washington Huskies 69-41 win over the USC Trojans ranks somewhere near roadside graffiti and finger painting.
At the Pacific-12 Conference media day way back in October, USC coach Kevin O’Neill looked at sophomore point guard Maurice Jones, who was seated next to him. He’d spent the previous 10 minutes discussing how much Jones meant to his team and how the Trojans couldn’t afford to be without him.
Terrence Ross can’t really explain why he owns the second half of basketball games. So, he’ll simply revel in the fact that it’s working, and just keep doing what he’s doing.
