TRACKING LOCAL GOLFERS ON THE PGA TOUR
This week: The Memorial Tournament, ended Sunday, Muirfield Village Golf Club, Dublin, Ohio.
In the field: Puyallup’s Ryan Moore, University Place’s Michael Putnam and Gig Harbor’s Kyle Stanley.
Putnam’s fourth-round score: 1-under-par 71.
Moore’s fourth-round score: 1-over 73.
Stanley’s fourth-round score: 4-over 76.
Position: Moore (5-under 283) tied for 19th, Putnam (even-par 288) tied for 55th, and Stanley (10-over 298) finished in solo 74th — all behind winner Hideki Matsuyama (13-under 275), who defeated Kevin Na in a sudden-death playoff.
Recap: In a word — consistent. That has been the hallmark of Moore’s season as he registered his seventh top-20 finish Sunday. He was in good position to finish higher being 1 under late in his round, but he finished with bogeys at No. 17 (had to wedge out of a fairway bunker) and No. 18 (short-sided himself on approach to right, missed 18-foot putt for par). ... The wheels looked as if they were coming off for Putnam midway through the back nine Sunday with three consecutive bogeys on Nos. 12-14. But he got up and down from the greenside rough at No. 15 for birdie, canned a 16-footer for birdie at No. 17, then nearly holed out from 190 yards at the finishing hole for a final tap-in birdie. ... Stanley went 80-76 for his weekend rounds with two total birdies. He birdied the third hole (9-iron approach to 16 inches), but followed with bogeys at Nos. 7, 9, and 10-12.
Next: For Stanley and Putnam, it will be a busy week — starting with U.S. Open sectional qualifying Monday at Brookside Golf and Country Club/Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio. About 120 golfers will be vying for 16 Open spots. Stanley goes off the first tee at Brookside, and Putnam off the 10th tee on the same course. Then it is off to the FedEx St. Jude Classic starting Thursday at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tenn.firstname.lastname@example.org
