As the hole closed quickly Kenny Easton bounced to the outside. He slipped a couple would-be tacklers before being upended after an 11-yard run for a first down.
The Peninsula High School student section barely made a murmur after the strong display from the Seahawks’ running back.
Easton was a victim of his own success. That will happen when you’re only a few minutes removed from dazzling the crowd with a pair of spectacular runs .
Easton reeled off touchdown runs of 80 and 87 yards in the first half and finished with 270 rushing yards as Peninsula remained undefeated on the season by knocking off Shelton, 42-0, in a Class 3A South Sound Conference matchup Friday at Highclimbers Stadium.
The senior running back finished with 270 rushing yards on 17 carries for Peninsula (4-0, 2-0 3A SSC).
The Highclimbers (2-2, 1-1) turned the ball over five times, including losing a fumble on the second-half kickoff, and paid for each of them as Peninsula built a 35-point cushion through three quarters.
“We had some opportunities and played well at times,” Shelton coach Matt Hinkle said, “but Peninsula outplayed us on offense and made stops on defense. We had a few chances to score, but just couldn’t get it in.”
Easton rambled 46 yards late in the third quarter to set up Blake Cantu’s 1-yard touchdown run plunge, giving the Seahawks a 28-0 lead.
Highclimbers quarterback Tyler Giraldes was 15 of 31 passing for 128 yards, and was intercepted three times. Kyle Kimball paced Shelton’s air attack, pulling down eight receptions for 58 yards.
On the first play of Peninsula’s second series, Easton came up with his first long touchdown run.
Two possessions later, Easton gave his squad their second one-play series, going 87 yards for a score.
Outside of Easton’s two long touchdown runs, however, the Seahawks failed to generate much else on offense in the first half, but still took a 14-0 lead into the break.
Peninsula forced four first-half turnovers, picking off Giraldes three times in the opening 24 minutes.
Cantu, who hauled in a 32-yard touchdown pass from Griffin Burke on the first play of the second half, had an interception and sacked Giraldes twice. Evan Johnson caught a 55-yard touchdown from Burke on the final play of third quarter and snagged a pair of interceptions.
Giraldes connected with Kimball seven times for 51 yards in the first half. .
