SUMNER 34, GRAHAM-KAPOWSIN 27
Play: Kickoff return.
Time remaining: 2:05 in the fourth quarter.
Score at the time: Graham-Kapowsin, 27-24.
What happened: Sometimes a great play call needs only a great player. Sumner’s Connor Wedington had not returned a kick all game, with G-K choosing to kick it short each time. But wanting to pin the Spartans deep in their own territory after taking the lead late in the game, the Eagles elected to kick it off to Wedington. He caught it at the 13 and darted through a hole on the right side before being surrounded by four G-K defenders about 60 yards down the field on the right sideline. So what did he do? Wedington avoided all of them by cutting hard to the left, got his jersey torn dragging one defender, juked one more and then ran into the end zone. “The one opportunity I get to truly have the ball in space, I have to take advantage of that,” Wedington said. “They had great blocks, and we just executed.”
