Just when teams think they’re getting a break with one of the Federal Way High School boys’ basketball teams’ starters exiting to the bench, in comes D’Jimon Jones.
Jones connected on four 3-pointers in the first quarter. He finished with a game-high 23 points off the bench as No. 1 Federal Way cruised to an 84-54 victory against Gig Harbor in the 4A West Central District 3 quarterfinals on Saturday at Puyallup High School to clinch a berth to regionals.
"I just got off to a good start by just going hard in warm-ups and just continuing to hit shots," Jones said. "I just come out there, get buckets, D up and do my job."
The Eagles (21-2) advance to face the winner of Curtis-Kentlake in the district semifinals at 6 p.m. Thursday at Puyallup and moves one step closer to winning their first district title since 2009.
Never miss a local story.
But they have bigger plans than that.
"We are capable of the best," Jones said. "We can do anything. We want to win that state championship. That our goal and we are about to go do that."
Casey Gearhart and Sam Gagliardi each scored 12 points for Gig Harbor (14-8), which faces the winner of Thomas Jefferson-Puyallup at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday at Puyallup.
