Soccer can be a fickle sport.
The Puyallup High School boys soccer team hadn’t lost a match this season. Their first came Tuesday in the first round of the Class 4A state tournament with Inglemoor handing them a 3-0 loss at Pop Keeney Stadium in Bothell.
Puyallup ends its season at 14-1-2 overall and had won 14 consecutive matches after ties in its two opening matches of the season.
Inglemoor’s Burke Fahling scored the match’s first goal in the 25th minute and held its 1-0 lead through halftime. Puyallup’s Trevor Lee had a penalty kick saved by Inglemoor goalkeeper Justin Busby just before the break.
Never miss a local story.
Inglemoor struck again in the opening minute of the second half. Jordan Travis made it 2-0 on an assist from Fahling and Puyallup fell behind 3-0 when Sawyer Stewart scored in the 60th minute on an assist from Rio Alcorta.
Inglemoor (11-2-3) advances to face the winner of Wednesday’s match between Tahoma and Camas in the state quarterfinals later this week.
Puyallup has lost in the first round of the state tournament each of the past three years — the second time in two years it has come at the hands of Inglemoor.
