Some of the area’s top baseball players will spend this weekend playing more baseball.
South Kitsap High School senior Mac McCarty, Todd Beamer’s Ben Arata, Kentwood’s Mike Ciancio, Puyallup’s Zach Needham, Central Kitsap’s Collin Palau and Decatur’s Garrett Westberg were among The News Tribune’s All-Area baseball players selected to play in this weekend’s 2015 All-State Baseball Series at East Valley High School in Yakima.
The players were spread across four teams:
Team Adams (coached by 4A state champion South Kitsap’s Marcus Logue).
Team Baker (coached by Shorewood’s Wyatt Tonkin).
Team St. Helens (coached by Lake Washington’s Derek Bingham).
Team Rainier (coached by Connell’s Tom Walker).
Team Adams plays Team Baker at noon Saturday and Team St. Helens plays Team Rainier at 3:15. All games are eight innings.
The losers of each game play each other at 10:25 a.m. Sunday and the winners play for the title at 1:35 p.m.
Logue said McCarty, a Washington State University signee who was named The News Tribune’s All-Area player of the year, won’t play this weekend due to a family conflict.
Needham and Ciancio will be teammates on Team Adams alongside Sumner’s Joey Muscanera, South Kitsap’s Cooper Canton.
Westberg will team with Tumwater’s Elijah Hill on Team Baker, which also includes Union’s Cody Hawken (the 2014-15 Gatorade Washington Baseball Player of the Year).
Palau will play for Team St. Helens alongside Graham-Kapowsin’s C.J. Blowers (the son of former Seattle Mariner Mike Blowers), Peninsula’s Ben Weymiller, White River’s Dustin France and Bellarmine Prep’s Jairus Richards.
Arata has a pair of Bonney Lake players – Grant Townsend and Taylor Graham – and Timberline players – Zack Owens and Taylor Adams – with him on Team Rainier.
Players must be seniors and are selected by baseball coaches from across the state.
