BELLARMINE PREP 16, OLYMPIA 13 (OT)
Play: Field goal.
Set: Special teams.
Down and distance: Fourth-and-4 on Olympia’s 18.
Never miss a local story.
Time remaining: Overtime.
Score at the time: 13-13.
What happened: Brian Jensen has way more experience in overtime games his first year as Bellarmine’s coach than he would have liked. But Jensen was adamant he had no qualms sending first-year kicker Bryce Bendixen onto the field to win the game Friday after Bellarmine Prep had lost its previous two overtime games against Gonzaga Prep and then two weeks ago to Yelm. Bendixen’s longest attempt this season was a 42-yarder, and here he was hoping to win the game from 34 yards out. But first Olympia called a timeout, then Bellarmine Prep sent its offense onto the field to try to draw Olympia offside before calling its own timeout. “It was a no-brainer to get Bryce out there to kick the game-winning field goal,” Jensen said. “We had been in that situation two times before this season and we chose to be aggressive and go for it. There wasn’t any second thought this time.” Bendixen got plenty of leg and sent it through and, in turn, set up a 4A Narrows title match this week against unbeaten Gig Harbor.
