Chet Thompson, Gig Harbor
Football, baseball
Thompson was selected to The News Tribune's All-Area football team as a quarterback. The Narrows League's Offensive MVP led the Tides to the postseason, passing for more than 1,000 yards, rushing for more than 1,000 yards and totaling 29 touchdowns. He also was an All-Area choice in baseball. The first-team All-Bridge Division pick has a scholarship to play baseball at the University of Portland.
Tevyn Tillman, Decatur
Football, wrestling
Tillman won back-to-back state championships in the 285-pound weight class at the Class 4A state wrestling tournament. He's not afraid to blaze his own trail. During the tournament, Tillman stayed loose by dancing to "goofy music" before his matches. He was just as dominating on the football field, too. Tillman earned first-team all-SPSL South honors on the offensive and defensive lines. He was a second-team selection to The News Tribune's All-Area football team.
Desmond Trufant, Wilson
Football, basketball, track & field
One of the finest three-sport athletes in the South Sound, a lingering ankle injury kept Trufant from qualifying for the state track and field meet in the triple jump - his leap of 45 feet, 7 inches was the seventh-best in Class 4A this season. On the football field, however, Trufant had a superb season. He was selected to The News Tribune's All-Area football team as a cornerback. Opposing quarterbacks threw just 28 passes in his direction, and only six were completed. Trufant racked up 1,750 all-purpose yards and 11 touchdowns as a receiver and running back. A starter for the Rams' basketball team, Trufant helped Wilson reach the West Central District basketball tournament for the first time since 2000. He has an athletic scholarship to the University of Washington, where he will play football.
Justin Veltung, Puyallup
Football, track & field
Opposing coaches would just as soon take the 15-yard penalty for kicking the football out of bounds as send the ball toward Veltung. He led the SPSL South in kick returns, averaging 33.4 yards per attempt, and piled up 188.8 all-purpose yards per game. Even though a turf-toe injury limited him to five games, the 5-foot-10, 175-pounder was good enough to be named to The News Tribune's All-Area Football team. Veltung gave up soccer - he was The News Tribune's Player of the Year in 2008, when he led the Vikings to the 4A finals - and instead competed in track and field this spring. His injury fully healed, he won the state title in the long jump and placed eighth in the high jump. Veltung has an athletic scholarship to play football at the University of Idaho.
Alex Davidson, Steilacoom
Soccer, basketball, track & field
Davidson excelled on the field and in the classroom. A team captain for the Sentinels' soccer team, she played forward and defender and is a two-time first-team all-Nisqually League 2A selection. On the basketball court, she averaged 7.1 points and 11.4 rebounds per game, earning second-team all-league honors. After sweeping the 100- and 200-meter sprints at the Class 2A state meet in 2008, she placed second in the 100 and fourth in the 200 this year. She graduated with a 3.8 grade-point average and will attend the University of Oregon.
Jacqie Evenson, Federal Way
Soccer, basketball, track & field
Evenson didn't lead the Eagles' girls basketball team in scoring, but she was the glue that held the youthful team together. With her leadership at point guard, Federal Way took third at the Class 4A state tournament, and she was named to The News Tribune's All-Area team. She was an all-SPSL North second-team pick at forward in girls soccer and placed eighth in the 300-meter hurdles at the state track and field meet. Evenson has a 4.0 grade-point average and will attend Gonzaga University.
Jessie Genger, Kentwood
Volleyball, basketball
What a senior year it was for the 5-foot-11 Genger. The powerful outside hitter was named to PrepVolleyball.com's All-America team, was selected to The News Tribune's All-Area volleyball team and helped the Conquerors place fourth at the state tournament. Kentwood lost in the quarterfinals to eventual champion Lewis & Clark. A state title didn't elude Genger for long. She was a first-team all-SPSL North guard on Kentwood's girls basketball team, which went 28-1 and breezed to the Class 4A crown. Genger also was a TNT All-Area pick in basketball and will play volleyball at Boise State.
Mara Koplitz, Enumclaw
Basketball, golf
Koplitz graduated first in her class at Enumclaw with a 4.0 grade-point average, was elected homecoming queen, served as the school's ASB leadership commissioner and - oh yeah - was pretty good at hoops and swinging a golf club. Koplitz was co-MVP of the SPSL 3A in girls basketball and helped the Hornets reach the Class 3A state tournament. She was the SPSL 3A Player of the Year in girls golf and led the Hornets to four consecutive league and district titles and the 2008 state title.
