Three old friends are returning to the basketball court, and 100 girls across the South Sound will reap the benefits.

After a seven-year hiatus, former coaches and players Cari Harrison, Chelle Miller and Mary Ann O’Dell have rekindled their HuskyBeaverDuck Girls Basketball Camp. This camp is different from most every other, though, in that the cost is “by donation.”

“With the economy the way it is,” Harrison said, “we wanted to make this available to everyone.”

There are two sessions each day during the five-day camp that runs Aug. 10-14 at St. Patrick’s School Gym, and the first 50 girls to register for each session will be accepted. Girls in grades 4-6 will practice from 9 a.m. to noon. Kids in grades 7-9 will go from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Each camper will receive a T-shirt, basketball and, Harrison added, “great coaching.”

The trio held their first camp in 1992 when Harrison and Miller were coaches at Bellarmine Prep and O’Dell coached at Peninsula. They stopped seven years ago to focus on raising their respective families. With older children, they’ve found time to get back into coaching, at least for a week.

“Our kids are grown up and we wanted to get back on the court and coach,” Harrison said.

All three played in college – Harrison at Washington, Miller at Oregon State and O’Dell at Oregon. Miller, a Bellarmine Prep graduate, was twice named the NCAA National Academic Player of the Year.

All-state football this weekend

Some high school football stars will put on pads for the last time on Saturday at two all-state football games. The 3A/4A game is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Everett Memorial Stadium, and the 2A/1A/B contest will be held at Zaepfel Stadium in Yakima.

In the big-school game, Auburn’s Jeff Gouveia, Federal Way’s Andru Pulu and Kentwood’s Hunter Blackmore will play for the West, while the East team will feature 14 South Sound players. They are: Curtis’ Stan Langlow, Peninsula’s Brandon James, Puyallup’s Justin Veltung and Sean Barber, Bellarmine Prep’s Luke Schindele, Mount Tahoma’s Ron Baines, Gig Harbor’s Tanner Davis, Cental Kitsap’s Howard McDonald, Olympia’s Dylan Parsons, Enumclaw’s Conner Elder, Lakes’ Tuiasosopo Niusulu, Bonney Lake’s Bobby Nix, Timberline’s Damien Anderson and Sumner’s Grant Cisneros. Federal Way coach John Meagher is an assistant on the West staff.

The South Sound athletes playing in Yakima are Tumwater’s Joe Cameron and London Vessey; Cascade Christian’s Taylor Colton; Life Christian’s Morgan Cox; Fife’s Brian Felshaw; Centralia’s Bruce Hansen, Devin Hughes and Bradley Schultz; Steilacoom’s Greg Herd; and Eatonville’s Cameron Homan. Centralia’s John Schultz is the West’s head coach.

Arena commits to WSU

Sal Arena has given an oral commitment to play baseball at Washington State University. The Puyallup senior plays third base and pitches, and was a member of The News Tribune’s All-Area baseball team.
