Turnabout is certainly fair play.

And it’s even better when it comes at the start of the high school football season.

Trailing for most of the last three quarters, quarterback Riley Carrel led a last-minute drive, and Andy Holdner finished it off with a game-winning 21-yard field goal to lift Enumclaw to a 17-16 non-league victory over Wilson at Stadium Bowl on Friday night.

Fumbles and penalties marred a back-and-forth game – much like it was when the Rams pulled out a 14-13 victory in the final minutes at Enumclaw in the 2008 season opener – but the Hornets went nearly 60 yards in the final 21/2 minutes to set up Holdner’s winning kick.

And this was a kicker who might have already been in coach Don Bartel’s doghouse for missing a field goal at the end of the first half that would have given Enumclaw a 10-9 lead.

Right before the Hornets ran their final play to set up the winning kick, it was Carrel who came to the sideline and told Bartel to show a little faith in Holdner to win the game.

“Riley said, ‘Trust me, coach,’ ” Bartel said. “So we ran a play to center (the kick), and played it from there.”

Earlier in the quarter, Carrel hit Joe Cerne on an 11-yard touchdown pass to pull the Hornets to 16-14.

“On the last drive, I don’t think there was anybody who thought we were going to lose,” Bartel said.

Louis Davis had a 61-yard scoring scamper for the Rams midway through the third quarter to give them a 16-7 lead.

Bellarmine Prep amassed 418 yards.

At Shelton 40, Mount Tahoma 16: Ryan Adams rushed for 218 yards and four touchdowns on 28 carries to lead the Highclimbers to a victory.

Shelton grabbed a 12-8 lead at the half thanks to two TDs by Adams (73, 2 yards).

SPSL SOUTH

Spanaway Lake 25, at Todd Beamer 13: Shey Patton rushed for 178 yards and a pair of scores, and the Sentinels opened the season with a victory over the Titans.

Patton’s second TD, on a 29-yard run, gave Spanaway Lake a 25-7 lead in the fourth quarter.

SPSL NORTH

At Auburn Riverside 30, Kent-Meridian 29 (2 OT): The Ravens went for a two-point attempt in the second OT – and it paid off in a wild game at Auburn’s Memorial Stadium.

After Connor Bjornstad completed his second TD run of overtime to tie it at 29, Cameron Grad ran in the two-point conversion for the win.

B.J. Arceneaux had both scoring runs in OT for the Royals.

SPSL 3A

At Peninsula 33, Sumner 0: J.R. Grosshans ran for 128 yards and two touchdowns and passed for 129 yards and another TD to lead the Seahawks over the Spartans at Roy Anderson Field.

Peninsula’s defense also played a large role, limiting Sumner to 137 yards total, including just 1 yard passing. The Seahawks also forced three turnovers.

At White River 41, Franklin Pierce 18: Blake Tidwell rumbled for 156 yards and four TDs as the Hornets triumphed in Buckley.

NON-LEAGUE

Orting 48, at Eatonville 24: It was the Braden Cordes show in the season opener for Class 1A’s fourth-ranked program.

Cordes, a senior, rushed for 139 yards and three TDs and finished off his night’s work with a 25-yard interception return for a score early in the fourth quarter.

At Tacoma Baptist 50, Charles Wright Academy 43: The fireworks on offense came in week one for a pair of Tacoma’s small-school juggernauts. Two of Michael Springs’ three TD runs were more than 40 yards, and Chris Gladney’s 2-yarder midway through the fourth quarter gave Tacoma Baptist a 50-30 lead.

The Crusaders overcame a stellar passing performance by Tarriers’ quarterback Brandon White, who threw for 343 yards and five TDs.
