A bout with the flu kept Bellarmine Prep forward Kelsey Witker off the field for a week at the end of the regular season.
She returned to play in the Narrows League girls soccer championship on Tuesday against South Kitsap, but she was hardly at full strength.
Witker lost seven pounds while ill, leaving her “just as weak as a kitten,” coach Joe Waters said.
Witker roared like a Lion on Saturday. The sophomore scored two goals and tallied an assist as Bellarmine Prep defeated Decatur, 3-0, in the Class 4A West Central District playoffs and clinched its seventh consecutive state berth.
The Lions (18-2-1), the district’s No. 4 seed, will play at KingCo 4A champion Issaquah (14-2-0) in the first round of the state playoffs this week. The game will be played on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Bellarmine Prep struck quickly against the Gators.
Sophomore forward Stephanie Hamilton scored in the ninth minute, and Witker added two second-half goals.
Waters said the plan was simple – attack Decatur.
“If we could get the ball down and play a little bit we could cause them some problems,” he said.
Waters also mixed up the lineup, changing his midfield, and was pleased with the results.
“We got a lot more energy out of that area,” he said.
Lions goalkeeper Autumn Golden recorded the shutout.
The game was suspended for 30 minutes late in the second half because of lightning.
Emerald Ridge 4, Olympia 1: Kimmie Stueckle scored two goals as the Jaguars locked up the school’s second trip to the state playoffs.
