Thomas Jefferson sophomore Amber Cratsenberg doesn’t want to make close finishes a storied part of her state high school swimming career.
But in the case of her first two state titles, she might have to make an exception.
The sophomore won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races by narrow margins, helping the Raiders (140 points) to a third place Saturday night at the girls state swimming and diving championships at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
Skyline won the Class 4A team title with 234 points, claiming the school’s first girls swimming championship. Garfield (176) was second, Issaquah (131) fourth ,and Todd Beamer (126) fifth.
After finishing second in qualifying in the 50 free to Kentlake’s Chelsea Bailey on Friday, Cratsenberg finished in a season-best 23.87 seconds on Saturday, while Bailey was disqualified for not holding still on the blocks.
“I was just really in shock afterward when I looked up at the board,” said the sophomore, whose time earned All-American consideration. “I actually did everything I wanted to do. I got my turns right, my start right, and I got my arms moving quick. So I was really happy with the swim.”
Cratsenberg stayed hot and won the 100 free (51.57, All-American automatic), holding off Stadium freshman Felicity Cann (52.50).
“At the 75 (yard mark) I could see her, ‘I was like, oh gosh, I gotta keep on going … got to go faster,’ ” Cratsenberg said with a laugh. “I don’t really like when the finishes are so close.”
Cann did well in her state finals race debut.
“It wasn’t as good as I wanted it to be,” she said of her swim. “I just put my head down and went as fast as I could.”
For Bailey, the disqualification was the beginning of a less than stellar night. She never fully recovered and struggled to regain Friday’s form, finishing fourth (57.27) in the 100 backstroke. Ballard’s Annemarie Thayer won the race with a time of 54.07.
Todd Beamer’s Rachel Kim put forth another solid swim in the 200 IM — earning automatic All-American status — but her 2:05.12 still wasn’t fast enough to keep up with Eastlake sophomore Katie Kinnear (2:02.53), who trimmed nearly three seconds off her preliminary time.
Kinnear also won the 100 butterfly (53:10), setting a new state record and breaking the previous mark of 53.34 set by Peninsula’s Lindsey Marchand last year.
Kim also notched a third place finish in the 100 back (56.88).
Skyline’s Andie Taylor — who was voted 4A swimmer of the meet — set a state record in the 200 free, finishing the race in 1:46.55, breaking the old record by nearly two seconds. She also won the 500 free in 4:45.47, recording the second-fastest time in state history.
In 4A diving, Auburn’s Shawna Jordan took home the title with 422.80 points. Thomas Jefferson sophomore Madison Kellar was sixth (326.90).
In Class 3A, Mercer Island edged Juanita 246.5 to 242 for the team title, while Sumner (102) finished 10th and Peninsula (69) was 15th. Sumner senior Taylor Ditty was third in the 100 free (53.88) and sixth in the 100 backstroke (1:00.93). Peninsula’s Casey Penrose was third in the 200 IM (2:09.49) and fifth in the 500 free (5:15.28).
Bonney Lake senior Kelsi Potterf finished fourth (347.80) in the diving finals.
In Class 2A, Fife finished tied for 10th, while Squalicum won the state title with 77 points. Fife senior Megan Harkness finished eighth in the 200 free (2:08.11) and sixth in the 500 free (5:40.34).
