Mike Sweeney's two-run single in the fifth inning was the eventual game-winner, as Seattle edged Oakland, 4-2, to sweep a three-game set at Safeco Field.

Adrian Beltre also drove in a pair of runs for the Mariners, who swept this set on the heels of a three-game slide. Doug Fister (3-4), who had lost three straight starts, got the win after throwing seven innings of one-run, five-hit ball. The righty also fanned four and walked one.

"I'm thankful that hit helped us win the ballgame tonight because Fister pitched great and our bullpen was lights out, as always," said Sweeney. "It was definitely a team effort, but I'm thankful I was able to contribute."

Jack Cust had a solo homer for the Athletics, who dropped their fourth in a row. Daric Barton also knocked in a run in the setback. Brett Anderson (11-11), who had won his last four starts coming in, suffered the defeat after surrendering four runs -- one earned -- on eight hits in five innings.

With the game tied in the fifth, the M's took the lead. Adam Moore led off with a single and nabbed second two outs later. Franklin Gutierrez then walked and Jose Lopez reached first on Kennedy's fielding error, which loaded the bags. Sweeney followed with a two-run single and Beltre added an RBI base hit to make it 4-1.

"We made one little mistake in the field and they capitalized on it big time," said Oakland manager Bob Geren. "That was the difference. We swung the bats a lot better than the score looked."

David Aardsma took over on the hill in the ninth and gave up a leadoff homer to Cust, which accounted for the final margin. The righty notched his 37th save.

The Mariners took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Beltre's leadoff homer to center field.

Barton's RBI double in the fourth knotted it up, though.
