Seattle Mariners ace Felix Hernandez was named the American League's Pitcher of the Month for September.
Hernandez wrapped up his superb 2009 season by going 5-0 with a 1.35 earned- run average during the final month. The 23-year-old righty also struck out 32 hitters and allowed just 33 hits in 46 2/3 innings (six starts) during the period.
The All-Star hurler finished the season with a 19-5 record, tied for the most wins in the majors, with a 2.49 ERA and 217 strikeouts in 34 starts.
It was Hernandez's second monthly award this season
Others receiving consideration were fellow contenders for the AL Cy Young Award: Kansas City's Zack Greinke (3-0, 0.55 ERA, 35 strikeouts), New York's CC Sabathia (4-0, 1.29 ERA, 36 strikeouts) and Toronto's Roy Halladay (4-2, 1.47 ERA, three shutouts).
