For those of you who missed out on yesterday's play-in game between the Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins, you missed out on one of the best games I've watched in a long time. It also served as a reminder of how magical postseason baseball can be. If that doesn't get you excited for today's playoff games, I don't what will.
That game had a little bit of everything. It had amazing plays, frustrating mistakes and just unbelievable momentum swings.
Admittedly, I was cheering for the Twins for a few reasons. First of all, I have a man-crush on Joe Mauer. Believe me, I'm not the only one, who feels that way.
Second of all, I believe that Ron Gardenhire consistently does more with less as a manager. And while he won't win AL manager of the year this year, he's still one of the best in the league. I respect the way the Twins have built their organization and the product they put on the field despite having one of the lower payrolls in baseball.
Lastly, the very first professional baseball game I ever saw was in the Metrodome. It was the Twins vs. the White Sox. The second major league game I saw was in the Dome and really I think the first 12 big league games I saw were in that place. Yes, it' s a sterile and ugly place now, particularly in comparison to Safeco Field. But it was all I knew as a stadium for a while, and it used to give me chills just walking in there. I know plenty of people are glad to see the Dome's demise, but it makes me kind of sad.
As I was watching the game, though, the overwhelming feeling that came over me was: "Damn, I wish the Mariners were in this situation."
Basically that was a postseason game and I want to cover a postseason game, and I'm sure Mariners fans want to see them in postseason baseball.
Anyway, there' s my lament ... There was some great coverage from that game, here's a few links.
ESPN's Gene Wojciechoski had this column as well.
It was a colossal choke for the Tigers as they became the first team in baseball history to blow a three game lead with four games to play.
