With 29 pitchers in camp - two are missing in action, but excused - the Seattle Mariners will open their first official workout today with 15 men throwing bullpen sessions.
Catchers, grab your cups and hunker down.
Pitching coach Rick Adair and bullpen coach John Wetteland put together a schedule that has about half the pitchers in camp throwing every other day to build arm strength toward the exhibitiion-game schedule. That means on any given day, 15-16 of the guys in camp are throwing from a mound.
The two missing pitchers? Right-handers Jesus Colome and Yusmeiro Petit. Colome is awaiting his Dominican Republic visa after signing with Seattle last week and Petit asked for a few days to complete some personal business before leaving Venezuela.
Both figure to join the club Friday or Saturday.
As for today, the usual first-day welcome, strething and playing catch, some batting practice for catchers, some defensive drills for pitchers and then the mound work.
Among those throwing bullpen on Day One: Felix Hernandez, David Aardsma, Brandon League, Doug Fister, Garrett Olson, Sean White, Chad Cordero and Josh Fields.
