Cliff Lee played catch for five minutes today - news in a camp that is anxious to know how long it will be before he can pitich.
"I felt a little better," Lee said of his second throw day since being sidelined with a strained abdominal muscle. "But that's as light as you be, just playing catch."
For now, Lee is scheduled to throw every other day as his muscle heals, and he and the Mariners know Lee will open the 2010 season on the disabled list. The issue is how long he'll stay on it.
Playing catch will keep his arm loose, but can't keep it strong - not without risking more effort. For now, Lee won't do that.
Instead, he'll be re-evaluated each day and, at some point, the Mariners will either begin to move forward with his work schedule or shut him down for complete rest.
