No Mariners game tonight, but you know who is playing .. yep, the Tacoma Rainiers at Cheney Stadium against the Sacramento River Cats. I will be there covering and I'm actually kind of excited about it, mainly because I want to see A's prospects 1B Chris Carter and OF Michael Taylor, who are rated No. 28 and No. 29 in Baseball America's top 100 prospects and hard-throwing reliever Henry Rodriguez.
Last year I saw the right-handed Carter hit a 400 foot home run over the scoreboard in right-center at Cheney in during the PCL playoffs. The guy has got sick power. Taylor came to the A's in the periphery of the Roy Halladay trade. He was traded from the Phillies to the A's, while Oakland sent 3B prospect Brett Wallace to the Blue Jays. Rodriguez hit 103 on the Cheney Stadium a handful of times last year in the playoffs and he routinely touches 99-101. Even more entertaining is that he doesn't really know where it's always going. The River Cats also have DH Jack Cust.
Of course, Mariners fans will want to see their prospects. Greg Halman has shown hints of his potential with a homer and a triple. And Michael Saunders is there along with Mike Carp. Also Ezequiel Carrera is rapidly becoming a crowd favorite.
And besides going to a Rainiers is some of the most affordable entertainment around. Thursdays nights are even $2 beer and $1 hot dog nights. If I wasn't covering the game, I'd be partaking in both.
If you can't go watch, feel free to listen to the venerable Rainiers announcer and TNT contributor Mike Curto (pictured at the top) on 850-AM or at tacomarainiers.com
