Former Mariners reliever/spot starter Chris Jakubauskas, now with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, was called up from Triple A on Friday and started today's game against the Houston Astros. But his debut with the Bucs didn't go well at all.
He was struck in the face by a line drive off the bat Lance Berkman in the first inning of the game.
Here's some video of it from mlb.com. It's absolutely scary. Jakubauskas was helped off the field and was taken to the hospital where he'll stay over night for precautionary reasons. Apparently he is going to be fine, which is good news. Berkman was understandably a little rattled after that first at-bat.
Current Rainiers pitcher Steven Shell was hit in the face with a line drive and wasn't as lucky last season. I remember seeing him afterward and it was awful. It's one of the scariest things in all of baseball.
