Another day in the Mariners minors, but I will start off with a former Mariners minor leaguer - shortstop Oswaldo Navarro - who was called up from Triple A Round Rock to the Houston Astros yesterday after Kaz Matsui was released.
Navarro was a source of many nights of humor in the Cheney Stadium Press Box with Mike Curto, Geoff Corkum, Drew Samuelson and others. Anyway, I never thought Ozzie would make it to the big leagues, and he did so congrats to him.
Curto on his must-read Mike ... off Mic blog - has a post about Navarro and other random things.
Class A Clinton has won four straight with lefty Jimmy Gilheeny pitching solidly in to get a win. Young OF prospect B hit a homer as well. I saw him play in spring training. He's fun to watch.
Meanwhile, Double A West Tenn lost its second game in a row. Carlos Peguero had three hits and his hitting .333 on the season, while Carlos Triunfel extended his hitting streak to nine games and he has now hit in 13 of his 14 games. He's now raised his average to .294.
In Class A High Desert, lefty Ryan Feierabend, who's coming back from Tommy John surgery on his elbow had a rough outing giving up six runs on nine hits in an 18-3 loss. But he knows his comeback is a work in progress.
AAA Tacoma Rainiers (PCL)
Of Note: With a 4-1 record and 1.64 ERA, starter Luke French ranks 2nd among all PCL pitchers through his first 8 starts this season. He leads the Rainiers rotation with 7 quality starts over his 1st 8 outings and is tops in the PCL with 55.0 innings pitched. Steven Shell tossed the Rainiers 1st complete-game shutout on the road against Nashville on May 12. His 9-inning effort prolonged a scoreless innings streak to a team-high 21.1 frames.
