Never miss a local story.
- Ichiro RF
- Figgins 2B
- Gutierrez CF
- Sweeney DH
- Lopez 3B
- Bradley LF
- Kotchman 1B
- Bard C
- Wilson SS
LHP Jason Vargas (3-2, 2.93 ERA)
Jason Vargas looks pretty sharp going 1-2-3 on three pop ups. The wind is actually blowing out, so you don't want to see too many fly balls.
Ricky Romero is pretty good. Brett Cecil not so much. We all saw what Cecil did to the M's last night.Romero goes 1-2-3
Three more batters, three more flyball outs for Vargas.
So now Mike Sweeney doesn't swing at a ball low and away, and he draws a walk. hmm. But three straight flyballs to center don't do much. Bradley hit his fly ball relatively hard.
Three more outs for Vargas, including two fly outs and his first groundball out.
The Mariners score a run as Josh Bard draws a lead-off walk, Josh Wilson singles softly up the middle, Ichiro sac bunts them into scoring position and then Chone Figgins bunts again to score a run. We're not watching the old Edgar, Griffey, Buhner era of baseball since it took two bunts to score a runner from second. M's lead 1-0
Vargas gives up his first hit, but gets two more fly bally outs top get out of the inning.
Romero walks Jose Lopez but gets a timely 1-6-3 DP to get out of the inning.
Well the lead is gone. Vargas gives up a single Alex Gonzalez and then left a fastball out over the plate that Jose Bautista hit into the visiting bullpen for two-run homer. Jays now lead 2-1.
The Mariners get back to back singles from Kotchman and Bard. Josh Wilson tries to bunt them into scoring position but fails on three straight tries. Ichiro hits into a fielder's choice and Figgins grounds out to short.
Look I didn't agree with the bunting in the the third inning, but I didn't have a problem here. Wilson just needs to do a better job. It's that simple. If he gets it down. Then Ichiro's ground ball second probably scores a run.
Both teams go down 1-2-3.
The Jays tack on another run as Edwin Encarnacion gets a sac fly after an Overbay single, a Gonzalez ground rule double and an intentional walk to Jose Bautista.
Josh Bard with a two-out double, but he's stranded when Wilson pops up to center.
Kanekoa Texeiera gives up a lead-off walk, but comes back double play to get out of the inning.
Ichiro Suzuki is thrown at second base on an attempted steal and manager Don Wakamatsu is thrown out of the game by second base ump Andy Fletcher after he argues the call. It's Wak's first ejection of his career.
Kevin Gregg was less than inspiring as the Cubs closer last season. I have several friends, who are Cub fans and hate him with the white hot intensity of a thousand suns. And he basically burped this game up, giving up back to back singles and then issuing back to back walks to load the bases and score a run. Josh Bard then delivered a game-tying RBI with a sac fly to left.
Junior has a chance to win it with runners on first and second and one out. And he delivers with a single to right.
