Pretty quiet morning here at Safeco, except for the multitude of kids here today. I barely made it in time for manager Don Wakamatsu's pre-game meeting with the press. Some of you also know that I-5 was a bit of an adventure today.
But really there wasn't much to talk about this morning.
Jack Wilson wants to take ground balls, but the Mariners are going to make him wait till Monday.
Wakamatsu said that when Wilson talked about his hamstring issues and even mentioning retirement that it was just a "down moment," and that Wilson has been more upbeat in recent days.
Never miss a local story.
Erik Bedard will throw on Friday. Adam Moore is progressing. Mark Lowe as well.
There was plenty of talk about Milton Bradley and his hitting and his demeanor since taking a break to visit a counselor.
Wakamatsu pointed to a recent at-bat where Bradley struck out in a key situation.
"It looked like he wanted to do something, but he stayed composed, stood there for a little bit and went out," Wakamatsu said.
There is no manager's guidebook for handling this situation. But Wakamatsu said he was around players with similar issues in Texas, so he had some understanding of what to do.
With Milton, I told him from day one, there has to be some kind of a trust factor that we are here to help him," Wakamatsu said. "That was step number one. And you've heard his comments. I think he believes in us now."
Bradley is DHing again today, and is batting fourth, where as Wakamatsu said, "he provides some protection" for Franklin Gutierrez. Mike Sweeney is playing first again today. So that's something to keep an eye on as well.
I will admit it. I cover baseball for a living and I had no idea, who Danny Worth is.
