Three days after the Mariners designated him for assignment, right-hande reliever Kanekoa Texeira was claimed by the Kansas City Royals - and Seattle filled the roster spot of Ken Griffey Jr. with reliever Chad Cordero.Texeira, 24, must be kept on the Royals 25-man roster or offered back to the New York Yankees, the team Seattle used the Rule 5 draft to claim him last winter.
Cordero, 28, is a former closer with the Washington Nationals whose career was sidelined by major shoulder surgery in July, 2008. He's pitched in the Mariners minor league system the past two seasons while rehabbing that shoulder.
With Tacoma this season, Cordero went 0-1, with six saves and a 4.12 earned run average. He returns to the majors with a career 20-14 record, 128 big-league saves and a lifetime 2.78 ERA.
