Ichiro Suzuki gets a day off today. And as we all know, a day off for Ichiro means being the designated hitter. Obviously, he has different expectations than other players. In his place, Ryan Langerhans will start in right field and bat second.
Langerhans was told by Wakamatsu after last night's game that's he'd likely be playing. His last start was on June 4 against the Angels, when he started in left field. He has played a few late innings in right field.
"It feels good to be in there and I'm going to up there and try to have a good approach every time," Langerhans said. "I think one thing I did the other night against Anaheim was I didn't take as many pitches as I'm accustomed to and I think it affected my timing."
Langerhans has worked hard with conditioning coach Allen Wirtala to keep his body in shape since he's playing so sparingly. He's also always out for early batting practice.
Never miss a local story.
"If you come in yourelf not in the lineup, I've just developed a routine of getting some routines and getting everyday work at first base and work at one of the outfield positions," Langerhans said.
Milton Bradley also gets a day off because Wakamatsu said he will play quite a bit in left field over the next six interleague games.
Wakamatsu said they will likely announce a decision regarding Ian Snell and his place in the rotation tomorrow in San Diego. What goes into that decision?
"Who would replace him, we talked about the ability of maybe French replacing him. How good was he last night? How he matches up? How Ian would match up? Those are the type of things we are looking at right now," Wakamatsu said.
My guess is it will be Luke French getting the start in St. Louis.
Snell has made 14 career starts and one relief appearance against the Cardinals 4-5, 5.35 ERA, he's given up 14 home runs and they are .290 against him with an .844 OPS
As for the future of Snell? I think they keep him around a little while longer until Doug Fister comes off the disabled list.
SS Jack Wilson is supposed to play seven innings today. He would either DH tomorrow or take it off and play nine on Saturday.
C Adam Moore will start his rehab today and probably catch five innings.
DH Mike Sweeney says he's about 90 percent back
C Josh Bard will catch bullpens, run over the weekend, and start his rehab stint next week.
LHP Erik Bedard threw 50 pitches in his bullpen and Wakamatsu said "he felt great." He will pitch a simulated game on Tuesday in St. Louis and it will be around 30 pitches.
