The Seattle Mariners are one of those nasty stretches - 20 games in 20 consecutive days, and this trip isn't helping.
They flew from Seattle to Dallas, from Dallas to San Diego and then from San Diego to St. Louis. Logistically, that makes little sense, and on Wednesday night they fly back to Seattle.
Manager Don Wakamatsu said the time zone changes and schedule have been tough on a team that's been taking extra batting practice nearly every day, so today he told his team to show up late and skip BP entirely.
"It's just a little break in a long stretch of games," Wakamatsu said.
Tonight, the Mariners play the 18th of those 20 consecutive games. Their record in the first 17: 6-11. Rob Johnson has hit .479 in his last seven games, raising his season average from .160 to .216. Johnson and Josh-not-Jack Wilson each have eight hits on this trip.
By comparison, Jose Lopez is 4-for-28, Michael Saunders 3-for-15, Ichiro Suzuki 6-for-29 and Franklin Gutierrez 6-for-28. This crew never seems to get hot at the same time.
The lineup today:
- Ichiro, RF
- Chone Figgins, 2B
- Franklin Gutierrez, CF
- Jose Lopez, 3B
- Milton Bradley, LF
- Josh Wilson, SS
- Mike Carp, 1B
- Rob Johnson, C
- Luke French, P
