Hard-throwing right-hander Michael Pineda has been promoted from Double A West Tenn to Triple A Tacoma. He joined the team in Portland and was spotted in the dugout late in the game.
UPDATED: Pineda will make his first start for Tacoma on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Cheney Stadium against Salt Lake City.
This is big news for Mariners and Rainiers fans. For those, who don't know much about him, Pineda (6-5, 190 pounds) is a big, strong right-hander with mid 90s fastball, a solid slider and a changeup.
Never miss a local story.
How good is Pineda's slider, well let's ask Hall of Famer Dave Niehaus.... HERE
Pineda was dominant in West Tenn posting an 8-1 record in 13 starts with a 2.22 ERA. In 77 innings, he struck out 78 hitters and walked just 17.
The move up is logical in a sense that it will force Pineda to learn to pitch more and rely on his other pitches. Triple A hitters in the PCL will not be overwhelmed by his stuff and won't let him simply overpower them.
