I'm working on my Sunday column and this time of year, almost every national writer puts together their personal all-star teams. I was going to go and put together a complete 34-man roster for each league. But I changed my mind.
While doing this, I wondered how many players the Mariners will place on the American League team. Ichiro is one of the top vote getters in the AL and will start in the outfield. And as Don Wakamatsu pointed out: "He's in the all-star game commercial. I think he's going to make the team."
Wakamatsu mentioned Cliff Lee and Felix Hernandez, obviously and also Jason Vargas and Doug Fister. But those are not happening.
I think Lee should start the all-star game personally. He's been that good. Lee (7-3) may not have as many wins as David Price (11-4) or CC Sabathia (10-3) but no pitcher has been better this season. He has five complete games in 12 starts, he's pitched 95 2/3 innings with a 2.45 ERA and 78 strikeouts and five walkouts. Those are starter credentials.
There was some worry that Lee would pitch that Sunday before the all-star game making ineligible to pitch, but Bedard will make that Sunday start, and Lee is going to start Friday.
Felix will make two more starts before the break - Monday and Saturday. With two wins, he would improve to 8-5. But he's gotten no run support this season and his ERA is at 3.03 ERA and could likely be under that. He has pitched 121 2/3 innings and struck out 116 batters and walked just 38.
So here's my starters for the AL and NL ... feel free to post your own.
