Sorry this a few hours late, the Mariners and Vice President of International Operations Bob Engle announced they have signed six international free agents today.
Signing their first pro contract with the Mariners organization were:
- RHP Jose Torres
- OF Phillips Castillo
- RHP Rigoberto Garcia
- LHP Luis Pina
- 3B Jose Calderon
- LHP Erick Gomez
According to Ben Badler of Baseball America, who reported three of the signings last week,
Castillo signed for $2.2 million, while Torres signed for $851,000 and Calderon for $477,500
Castillo, 16 (2/2/94), is a 6-foot-2, 190-pound right-handed hitting outfielder from the Dominican Republican. "We have been following Castillo for two years and believe he was the best position player available among the July 2nd candidates," Engle said. "He is exceptionally strong for his age and another player with a great makeup. The ball explodes off his bat and had good running speed. He has an above average arm and solid in the field. We are extremely pleased to bring him into our organization." He will receive an invitation to the 2010 Instructional League in Arizona.
Here's some video with Castillo ...
Calderon, 16 (2/15/94), is a 6-foot-2, 185-pound right-handed hitting third baseman from Venezuela. "We felt he was one of the more accomplished young hitters available in the international market," VP of International Operations Bob Engle said. "He has a great makeup and is sound fundamentally at the plate. Calderon drives the ball hard as well as showing some long ball ability. In the field he is stead with sure hands and true arm." Calderon will receive an invitation to the 2010 Instructional League in Arizona.
Garcia, 16 (9/23/93), is a 6-foot-5, 202-pound right-handed pitcher from the Dominican Republican. Engle describes him as "A tall young man who has strong arm and all the makings to become a true power pitcher. He already shows solid average fastball now with ability to throw well above average down the road. Garcia could be the sleeper of the group. He is very similar to Michael Pineda when he first joined our organization."
Gomez, 17 (1/16/93), is a 6-foot-1, 165-pound left-handed pitcher from Venezuela. "He is a poised young projection pitcher with good pitching mechanics and good feel for pitching," Engle said.
Pina, 16 (12/6/93), is a 6-foot-2, 178-pound left-handed pitcher from Venezuela. Engle says "He is accomplished, poised and already has good feel for pitching. He will have to make some adjustments in his delivery as many young pitchers do, but physically has ability to be solid in all areas." Pina will receive an invitation to the 2010 Instructional League in Arizona.
Torres, 16 (born 9/1/93), is a 6-foot-4, 165-pound right-handed pitcher from the Colombia. Engle describes him as "a tall, thin young man with very good delivery and very projectable body build. He is a hard worker, very intense and has a good aptitude. Torres has chance to throw harder down the road and displays advanced breaking ball for his age." Torres will receive an invitation to the 2010 Instructional League in Arizona.
