The Seattle Mariners get their ace and 2010 Cy Young Award winner on the mound today as Felix Hernandez makes his Cactus League debut against the Oakland Athletics.
Hernandez is more than healthy, he's anxious to face hitters. Yes, he understood the schedule from the outset - the Mariners bringing him along without the early adrenaline rush that might make him tax his arm too soon. That didn't mean he liked it.
Today, we should find out more about the stomach issues Franklin Gutierrez has been fighting since last June, and we might learn more about Miguel Olivo and the MRI done yesterday on his left groin area. Oh, and Jack Wilson will indeed make his Mariners debut at second base today.
Today also signals why the pitching numbers in camp will change soon. With Felix, then Michael Pineda scheduled to throw three innnings apiece today - and other starters following - the Mariners are simply running out of innings to give 33 healthy pitchers in camp.
Never miss a local story.
The minor league camp opened to pitchers and catchers today, and Seattle will be sending more there soon, including June draft pick James Paxton.
And then there's this: Adam Moore was in the original lineup today but was scratched - no word on why just yet - and replaced by Chris Gimenez.
Here's today's lineup:
