The old rule is that in every spring training game a team must start three every day players. The Mariners are starting a lineup that features one for certain - Jack Cust. You can kind of count Michael Saunders as an every day player, though he needs to pick up his hitting if he expects to be an every day player for much longer. But the rest? Adam Kennedy and Josh Wilson are fighting for a utility spot.
Are the Mariners going to get in trouble for this? No. But it's an interesting lineup.
I'm excited to see Dustin Ackley start at second base. This Ackley third start of the spring. It's become very apparent that he's going to start the season with the Rainiers, which I think is actually good for him. And of course, it's always good to see Michael Pineda on the mound, with his newly listed height of 6-f00t-7 and weight of 260 pounds.
Speaking of Pineda and Ackley and Alex Liddi, TNT columnist John McGrath wants them to make the Mariners out of spring training.
