Weather has discovered Arizona, and sent rains and high winds into the forecast, so the Seattle Mariners have taken precautions with their prized rookie pitcher, Michael Pineda.
The big right-hander was scheduled to face Cincinnati this afternoon, but the weather will intensify about that time. Scratch Pineda? No - move his start up a few hours.
He'll now start a minor league game at the Peoria complex about 10 a.m., as the team hopes to get him his work and keep him on target to start the regular season, if they indeed choose to take him north. While that remains a question mark, the team isn't about to risk him on a slick mound.
Oh, and by the way, should that Cactus League game begin, David Pauleys will start. Yes, there's more than a little humor there being tossed about in the clubhouse. Pineda isn't expendable but - ahem - you are, Pauley.
Pauley? He's pitched in worse and he'd take the ball in a hailstorm if he was asked.
