No suprise in the lineup today against lefty Gio Gonzalez, and as manager Eric Wedge acknowleded, it's been tough getting everyone in the this first three-game series with Oakland.
A few interesting tidbits, though, from the manager before the game. Among them:
- Three Mariners have been picked off first over the first 18 innings, and Wedge chalked it up to a risk-reward approach. "When Brendan (Ryan) was picked off last night, I'd told him to go on first move and he did - and the guy threw over," Wedge said. "That one's on me. When Ichiro was caught, I thought it was a balk move. We're going to get caught occasionally, but that will happen if you're being aggressive."
- Miguel Olivo is still icing the groin muscle he strained March 5, but was used as a pinch-hitter for Adam Moore last night - then ran the bases with abandon. If he'd been reinjured, who'd have caught the ninth inning? "I asked that same question the other day, who'd like to be the emergency catcher, and Adam Kennedy jumped up," Wedge said. "It would have been interesting - Brandon League throwing to Adam Kennedy. You gotta do what you gotta do to win that game."
- This Mariners staff works days ahead on its plans for lineups vs. opposing pitchers, and was a little ... aggravated when the Texas Rangers completely changed their rotation today for the Seattle series. "You're always looking ahead, and we'll just adjust," Wedge said.
