Young prospect Carlos Peguero, who was called up yesterday after Justin Smoak was placed on the bereavement list, will make his first major league start today against the Detroit Tigers.
Peguero will start in left field and bat 7th.
He of course called people to let them know. Manager Eric Wedge gave him the heads up yesterday that he could likely start today.
"I called my mom and my sister and they’re going to tell everybody," he said.
So can they watch the game?
"They have a TV and the cable and they can watch it," he said.
And with it being a day game, the three-hour time change in the Dominican Republic, isn't a problem.
"It’s three hours from here, so 3:40," he said.
What should we expect from the big kid? Well, he lunches on fastballs and can hit them prodigious distances. Curve balls? Not so much. Is he Pedro Cerrano from Major League? No. But his recognition level of breaking and offspeed pitches needs to improve (which is the case of most young hitters.)
But the power is very real. When the Rainiers came up to Seattle a few weeks back for a workout before they opened the season, Peguero reportedly hit it over the batter's eye in centerfield at Safeco. The fence in center is at 405, and the batter's eye is some 30 feet beyond it, and it's about 30 feet tall. He confirmed the report.
"Yes, I did," he said sheepishly.
The BP pitch was delivered by Alonzo Powell.
That has to be 480 some feet. That's big boy power.
Eric Wedge didn't know that till shortly before meeting with the media. GM Jack Zduriencik told him of the monster blast.
"I can’t picture that right now sitting here," he said. "I’ve never really taken note of where that is, but I think it’s quite a ways away."
Yes it is.
