I was covering the Rainiers yesterday, and the day before and the day before, and will be the day after and the day after. Anyway, Sunday's game was pretty entertaining as Dustin Ackley hit a two-run homer in the seventh to lead the Rainiers to a 5-2 win.
There was plenty of lead-up into the homer with Ackley taking a borderline 2-2 pitch to get a better pitch on 3-2.
Speaking of Ackley, my Sunday column on "When will Ackley get called up?" finally got put up on the website - big thanks to editor Kenny Via.
Any time Ackley is mentioned as a call-up, the questions about his ability to play second base follow.
Never miss a local story.
They shouldn’t. Ackley made the transition to second base before the start of the 2010 season and admittedly, it was far from pretty at the start.
“At the beginning of last year, I would have said I was probably a little lost in Double-A,” said Ackley, who played outfielder and first base in college. “I didn’t have much game experience. But I was able to progress.”
And he isn’t lost now.
“Before I just wasn’t comfortable when it came to double plays and things like that,” he said. “Now I’m comfortable in every aspect.”Mariners columnist John McGrath was also at Cheney Stadium yesterday, and wrote a column on Ryan Langerhans, who followed Ackley's homer with a solo homer and also made a pair of nice catches in centerfield.
“No matter how long you play in the big leagues, the biggest impact you can have is to give whatever insight you have to somebody else,” said Langerhans. “Now I’m not sure whether my advice is helpful or hurtful, but I’m trying to help these guys out – especially guys at this level for the first time. I’m working to get myself back up there, but also to get these guys up there.”
“Much more than whatever your numbers are gonna be, I feel like you can leave your mark in this game by the way you help others.”
Class A High Desert picked up a 9-4 win over Visalia. Dennis Raben went 4-for-4 with a solo home run.
Class A Peoria dropped its fourth straight game. Kalian Sams hit a double and a home run.
Double A Jackson had its game rained out.
