When the Mariners selected left-hander Danny Hultzen with the second pick of Monday's MLB amateur draft, it was a bit of a surprise. It's not that Hultzen isn't talented. It's not that Hultzen wasn't top 10 level pick. It just seemed as though the Mariners were going to draft a hitter with that No. 2 pick. Instead they took the top left-handed pitcher in the draft.
“Is anyone complaining about our pitching?” GM Jack Zduriencik asked. “We have 59 more picks to make in the draft, and it’s all about acquiring talent. To get a left-handed pitcher of this caliber, with his history, made sense.”
It was a point of some consternation amongst fans and draft "experts." But I will trust Zdurienick and scouting director Tom McNamara. I've seen Hultzen pitch two innings on TV.
But you can see Hultzen for yourself and two other Mariners draft picks for yourself. Virginia, the top seed in the NCAA tournament field, will face UC Irvine today in Game 1 of its three-game NCAA Super Regional against UC Irvine. The game will be televised at 10 a.m. local time on ESPNU
