Right-hander Blake Beavan, one of the players the Seattle Mariners acquired in the Cliff Lee deal with Texas last year, will make his major league debut Sunday when he starts against the San Diego Padres.
Beavan, 22, is a 6-foot-7 and 240 pounds, and while he's not a hard throw, his fastball tops ou.t around 92-93 mph and he has command of three other pitches. With the Tacoma Rainiers in 2011, Beavan is 5-3 with a 4.45 earned run average in 16 starts
To make room for Beavan, the Mariners will need to make two moves Sunday - one on the 25-man roster and another on the 40-man roster. Easiest move would be to designate catcher Jose Yepez for assignment, wait for him to clear waivers and return him to the minor league system.
Beavan will be the third member of that Lee trade return to appear with the Mariners. Justin Smoak is the starting first baseman, Josh Lueke a hard-throwing relliever who pitched with Seattle earlier this season and is now in Tacoma.
