Closer David Aardsma will undergo season-ending 'Tommy John' surgery to rebuild his right elbow next week, and likely miss 10-12 months of baseball afterward.
Aardsma, 29, began the season on the disabled list after December hip surgery, with the Seattle Mariners
hoping he might return to the bullpen some time in May. Instead, on a May rehab assignment in Tacoma, Aardsma's right elbow flared up.
Shut down for a month, Aardsma then began an attempt to comeback without surgery. On Thursday, he underwent an MRI exam, and once team doctors reviewed the results, their recommendation was simple: major reconstructive elbow surgery.
