Justin Smoak can't catch a break. The guy was so excited to get back into the starting lineup after missing the last seven games with a sprained thumb. So what happens when he gets back? In the second inning, he takes a ground ball off the face and suffers a broken nose.
The last ground ball Smoak tried to field took a bad hop and hit him in the free hand, spraining his left thumb. Now he has a broken nose.
As for the game, the Mariners should have scored more than four runs. Yes, we all know that the Mariners are offensively challenged. They've scored two runs or less 50 times this season. It's tied with the Giants for most in MLB. And four runs is big for them. But on a night when John Lackey was awful early and mediocre at best, they managed just four runs.
The Mariners stranded five runners in the first two innings. And they should have knocked Lackey out of the game by the third, instead they let him off the hook. He got some of his control back and pitched into the seventh inning.
“He’s an experience professional starting pitcher,” Wedge said of Lackey. “If he’s not as sharp early on you know he’s going to keep working to find it, and that’s what he did. We left some runners on base early on.”
To be fair, they left some runners on base late too. Seattle stranded 11 runners on base and was 4-for-16 with runners in scoring in position. But they had just three hits after the fourth inning.
Mike Carp did extend his hitting streak, going 3-for-4.
