Eric Wedge met the media this morning before the Seattle Mariners and Boston Redo Sox squared off, and his voice was hoarse.
"From yelling at umpires, players and people in general," he explained.
Someone then asked if a game like last night's 5-4 Mariners victory pumped the team up. Wedge didn't yell, but his eyes grew wide.
"No club managed by m should ever be in need of finding something in a game to keep them going," he said. "You're in the big leagues. You're a professional. You have a responsibility Each day you have the opportunity to be great."
It wasn't all managerial philosophy. When Wily Mo Pena's power was mentinoed, Wedge had an anecdote.
"We were playing the Red Sox in Boston, and Pena hit a ball off the Green Monster in Fenway - hit it so hard that the shortstop fielded the ball on one hop," Wedge said. "That's power."
