Not a ton of news coming out of the pregame meeting with Eric Wedge. Perhaps the most pressing concern is that Felix Hernandez will not start until Tuesday against the San Diego Padres. Wedge said the chance to give Hernandez a few extra days was a good thing to rest his stiff back. Hernandez had hoped to start on Sunday.
With Hernandez unable to go, Blake Beavan will start on Sunday instead against right-hander Chad Billingsley (3-4, 3.80 ERA). With the off day, Beavan will be on normal rest.
The Mariners took infield/outfield before the game along with bunt coverages and pitcher's fielding practice. There was no specific reason for the drills. But following an off-day and with another off-day on Monday, Wedge felt it was prudent, mentioning its something he likes to do about this time each season. Don't be surprised to see them do it again before Tuesday's game.
I saw Mariners director of amateur scouting Tom McNamara walking in Safeco with a pretty large young athlete ... it was fourth-round pick Patrick Kivlehan - the Rutgers football player turned baseball player. I assume that Kivlehan is getting his physical taken and probably preparing to sign his contract. No word on when we will get to talk to him.
