Congratulations to R.A. Dickey on winning the National League Cy Young Award yesterday. While we aren't supposed to be fans in our jobs, you couldn't help but root for Dickey. He was one of the single best people I've ever covered in journalism. He is honest, thoughtful, intelligent, compassionate, competitive and filled with a desire to continue to learn. The award and the success couldn't have happened to a better man.
Meanwhile, Felix Hernandez, who is also a pretty good guy in his own right, finished fourth in the American League Cy Young voting behind winner David Price, runner up Justin Verlander and Jered Weaver. Hernandez was a legitimate contender at the start of August. He had won nine straight decisions, tossed a perfect game and had five shutouts. But some rough starts down the stretch took him out of the running.
