The Mariners have called up pitchers James Paxton, Chance Ruffin and Hector Noesi and infielder Carlos Triunfel as their late season call-ups. Paxton takes the final spot on the 40-man roster. Also among the call-up was Rainiers hitting coach Howard Johnson, who will be with the team the final month. It was a little surprising that recently acquired outfielder Xavier Avery and reliever Bobby LaFromboise weren't also called up as well.
Pitching coach Carl Willis said that the Mariners will go to a six-man rotation. Meaning that Paxton will join the rotation and start Saturday at Safeco Field against Tampa Bay. He has about 25 innings left before reaching his innings limit. Taijuan Walker will make two more starts - tomorrow and then Tuesday against the Astros, and will be shut down for the season. Willis also confirmed that Hisashi Iwakuma won't go over 210 innings this year. Iwakuma has thrown 191 innings this season -second most in the American League.
So right now the rotation goes like this ...
Never miss a local story.
Willis said that Walker would make his last start of the season on Sept. 9 against the Astros at Safeco Field. After that, Brandon Maurer would likely join the rotation in Walker's spot.
