MARINERS 5, ANGELS 3 (AT TEMPE DIABLO STADIUM)
The facts: Lefty Roenis Elias bolstered his bid for a spot in the rotation by limiting the Angels to one run and two hits in five innings.
Play of the game: The Mariners took advantage of an error by first baseman Kole Colhoun by scoring two unearned runs in the sixth inning and stretching their lead to 4-1.
Plus: Michael Saunders and Dustin Ackley delivered two-out RBI singles in the first against Angels starter C.J. Wilson…Saunders went two for three and raised his average to .367 (11 for 30).
Never miss a local story.
Minus: A two-out error by second baseman Ketel Marte on a routine grounder in the LA ninth made things interesting. The Angels then got runners to second and third before Yoervis Medina ended the game by retiring Brennan Boesch on a line drive to center.
Quotable: “Every morning when I wake up, and especially the first couple of throws, I’m thinking, `Oh, I hope I don’t feel it.’ Then I don’t feel it, and I don’t think about it.” — pitcher Taijuan Walker, after a 40-pitch bullpen workout, on his recovery from bursitis in his shoulder.
Extra innings: Scott Baker threw 4 2/3 innings in a minor-league game to avoid facing the Angels for a third time. He gave up two runs and five hits in 75 pitches…The Orioles are showing interest in infielder Nick Franklin, according to CBSSports.com…Admission to Tempe Diablo Stadium was delayed while workers cleared swarms of bees…Outfielder Stefen Romero is battling a stomach virus but is in line for some work at third base when he returns to the field…The Mariners, after yielding 22 steals in 28 attempts, drilled their pitchers on improved efforts to hold runners. It probably still needs work; the Angels were three for three.
Up next: Monday’s schedule provides the Mariners with the first of their two camp open dates. The other one is March 27. They resume play at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday against San Diego at Peoria Stadium. Lefty Randy Wolf is scheduled to start against Josh Johnson. Root Sports will carry the game.
