MARINERS 5, PADRES 5 (AT PEORIA STADIUM)
The facts: Willie Bloomquist tied the game with a two-out RBI single in the eighth. He took second on the throw home — and then scored when Padres catcher Austin Hedges threw wildly to second. Hedges atoned somewhat with an RBI single in the ninth against Dominic Leone.
Play of the game: Left fielder Dustin Ackley, whose arm is often viewed as suspect, thwarted Yonder Alonso’s bid to stretch a leadoff single into a double in the second inning. And it wasn’t close.
Plus: Randy Wolf pitched four scoreless innings…Ackley also beat out a perfect bunt up the third-base line in the second inning…Brad Miller led off the third inning with a no-doubt homer to right. He also had a single and a double in four at-bats.
Never miss a local story.
Minus: Closer Fernando Rodney inherited a 1-0 lead in the sixth but started the inning with a walk, single and a double. That produced the tying run. A passed ball on catcher Mike Zunino allowed another run to score…Padres took a 4-2 lead in eighth on Carlos Quentin’s two-run double against Hector Noesi.
Quotable: “The fact is most closers stink in spring training. They’re pitching the fifth and sixth, and it’s tough. They’re a different animal. It’s hard to get their adrenaline going. We just need to keep getting him out there and getting his work in.” — manager Lloyd McClendon on Rodney, who has allowed eight runs and nine hits in four innings.
Extra innings: Logan Morrison was ejected for arguing a called third strike in the eight inning...Outfielder Cole Gillespie was reassigned to minor-league camp prior to the game.…Second baseman Robinson Cano is expected to play Wednesday against the Brewers after returning from a few days in the Dominican Republic. He left camp on a planned absence to deal with some family issues…McClendon confirmed lefty Roenis Elias will get at least one more start. It’s tentatively slotted for Saturday in a split-squad game against Colorado at Salt River Fields…Felix Hernandez’s next start, Thursday, will be in a minor-league game in order to allow Erasmo Ramirez to face the Cubs at their new complex in Mesa.
Health issues: Right-hander Brandon Maurer reported no day-after problems with his back after throwing Monday for six minutes at 75 feet…Right-hander Taijuan Walker is scheduled for a 50-pitch bullpen workout Wednesday in his ongoing recovery from bursitis in his shoulder.
Up next: The Mariners are back Wednesday afternoon at Peoria Stadium for a game against the Milwaukee Brewers. Blake Beavan is slotted for the start; the Brewers list Wily Peralta as their starter.
