MARINERS 3, ROCKIES 2 (AT PEORIA STADIUM)
The facts: Nate Tenbrink’s line-drive RBI single capped a three-run rally in the ninth inning Friday in the Mariners’ spring home finale at Peoria Stadium, which is scheduled to undergo a renovation prior to next year.
Play of the game: Tyler Smith’s two-run double past third tied the game against Rockies reliever Manny Corpas, who inherited a 2-0 lead to start the ninth inning.
Plus: Rookie lefty Roenis Elias gave up two runs in five innings in his first outing since learning he will open the season in the big leagues. Both runs scored in the third inning and were somewhat tainted…Yoervis Medina retired six straight in his two innings with three strikeouts.
Never miss a local story.
Minus: Center fielder Abraham Almonte misplayed Tyler Chatwood’s leadoff drive into a triple in Colorado’s two-run third inning…The Mariners had only four hits before the ninth inning…right-hander Felix Hernandez received a formal reprimand from Major League Baseball for a uniform violation in his last spring start. The problem? His jersey was unbuttoned to a level below the Mariners’ logo. Future violations could result in a $1,000 fine.
Quotable: “In my mind, I came here to win a job. I was going to do everything I could to not waste this opportunity.” — Elias on making the jump from Double-A Jackson to the big leagues.
Extra innings: Right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma, who began playing catch earlier in the week got what the Mariners termed a “clean bill of health” in the latest exam to gauge his recovery from a strained tendon in his middle finger. That means no medical restrictions.
Up next: The same two teams close the spring in a 12:10 p.m. game at Salt River Fields in Scottsdale. Right-hander Chris Young, signed Thursday, makes his debut in a Mariners’ uniform. Lefty Franklin Morales will start for the Rockies.
