After Monday's win, the Mariners designated backup catcher John Buck for assignment. They now have 10 days to trade, release or outright him to the minor leagues.
Buck was hitting .226 in limited duty as the backup catcher. A corresponding move – likely the call-up of catcher Jesus Sucre from Tacoma – will be made Tuesday.
The move surprised and quieted what was initially a celebratory Mariners clubhouse postgame.
"These things are never fun,” Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said. “John Buck is a fine, fine baseball player. I think he has been great for this club, a wonderful individual. We have a catcher at Triple-A that's turning the corner.”
Monday was Buck's 34th birthday.
