Mariners ace Felix Hernandez will get the "honor" he coveted when he starts Tuesday for the American League in the All-Star Game at Target Field in Minneapolis.
AL manager John Farrell of the Boston Red Sox tapped Hernandez for the duty Monday at a news conference in Minneapolis. St. Louis right-hander Adam Wainwright will start for the National League.
Farrell's lineup also has Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano batting third. Cano is making his fifth straight All-Star start but his first since signing with the Mariners as a free agent in December 2013.
Hernandez is an All-Star for the fifth time in his career, but this marks his first starting assignment. He worked one scoreless inning in the 2009 and 2013 games as a reliever. The only other Mariners pitcher to start an All-Star Game is Randy Johnson, who drew the assignment in 1995 and 1997.
It isn't hard to see why Farrell chose Hernandez, who is 11-2 with a 2.12 ERA in 20 starts.
