Last week we gave you some background information on Larry Nemmers and crew, who worked the Arizona game. Mike Carey is the referee assigned to Seattle's game against the Giants on Sunday. The Seahawks are 9-2 under coach Mike Holmgren when Carey referees. That includes eight consecutive victories, mostly against bad teams. Since coming to Seattle, Holmgren does have a 2-1 replay-challenge record against Carey, compared to 3-30 against everyone else (by my count). Opponents are 2-3 in replay challenges with Carey on the job.
The penalty numbers are almost identical to those when other referees work Holmgren-coached Seattle games: about 5.5 penalties against Seattle and 6.5 against the opposing team. I'll be watching to see whether this crew slows down the Seattle offense, as the Seahawks said Nemmers' crew did. And we'll want to see if this crew enforces rules against horse-collar tackling, particularly as it applies to RB Shaun Alexander.
NOTE: Officiating information culled from official NFL gamebooks. In some cases the gamebooks do not include all declined penalties. For this reason, official stats will differ slightly.
