The highlight of our conference call with Vikings coach Brad Childress might have been when we asked about his decision to call a fake field goal against Carolina earlier this season. In light of Mike Holmgren's aversion to such plays, we wondered where Childress stood on the risk-reward "continuum" (as that wordsmith Danny O'Neil of the Seattle Times put it). Childress declined to answer the question for fear of giving the Seahawks a competitive advantage. The coach played it safe, in other words, when asked about his comfort level in taking risks. That was enough to amuse me on a dreary, rain-soaked Wednesday morning. We also asked Childress about his offensive line; he said the continuity and communication are a "work in progress" because they have new guys in new places, starting with LG Steve Hutchinson, who once played for the Seahawks, as I recall.
